We wanted for some time to do a proper analysis of the amount of money small companies are typically wasting on IT Hardware Infrastructure. In putting this together we’ve tried to be as fair and balanced as possible. The following is in the context of a small business with 10 employees.
In the following spreadsheet each of the tabs corresponds to the 3 different options below. The business scenario we are using is a company purchasing a new server and associated hardware and software.
Scenario 1) Purchasing an onsite Server and the associated accessories and hardware along with installation costs
Scenario 2) GoGrid Cloud Computing Environment
Scenario 3) Amazon EC2 Cloud Computing Environment (TBC)
So to summarize comparing a typical onsite server installation and setup and associated costs the prices is Euro 4343/year.
Getting exactly the same functionality on the GoGrid Cloud Computing platform works out at Euro 1879.90/year.
This is a reduction of Euro 2,463 per year or 56% saving.
If you reduce the RAM on your GoGrid Server to 1GB the cost drops significantly to Euro 868/year which is a saving of Euro 3,475/year. In percentages this equates to an 80% saving on your IT infrastructure budget per year!
The most important thing to remember is not to reduce the companies spend on Information Technology. Instead stop wasting money on things that do not add value to your business and re-focus it on adding value by reaching your customers and innovation.

Growth Fund for SME

Good reason to find your local Enterprise Ireland office and sign up. The fund is provided to assist companies in the following areas.
- capital investment
- technology acquisition
- recruitment of key managers
- consultancy to assist with the implementation of the Growth Fund proposal
- management development and
- staff training
For the planning stage there is also a Strategic Consultancy Grant which could provide up to 50% funding towards the cost of a consultant to assess their requirements under the Growth Fund and to assist with the preparation of an application.
This is an overall fund of which the Workplace Innovation Fund (WIF) is a key component of the Growth Fund. This fund is a joint initiative between Enterprise Ireland the National Centre for Partnership and Performance (NCPP).
